Last Friday, there was an incident at UC (Davis Campus) in which several students wound up getting arrested for defying police orders to move their camp. This group was protesting the high tuition rates there. Their rates have gone up approximately 16 percent a year with no end in site. The students got the idea “Occupy” from OWS. We as teaparty students say to express your grievances within the law and with sympathize with high tuition rates. Because we don’t teach the constitution in the lower grades the students don’t know it.
At UC, this video shows a police officer pepper spraying a group of students sitting down. The campus officers were told by the university president that the students couldn’t encamp there but that they can occupy. The university officials had warned the protestors several times to move out but the protestors refused. Campus police gave the students a deadline of Friday at 3pm to have all of the tents out. At 3pm, the officers came back in riot gear and were met with resistance.
According to UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza, about 200 students surrounded the officers making difficult for them to do their job. A bunch of students who totally defied officers got down and sat down- in which then they were peppersprayed. Those that resisted being told to move were arrested. There were about 10 of them. The video only shows police pepper spraying the students.
The event is under investigation by UC officials.
